8 Tips for a Happy and Healthy Rakshabandhan

It’s hard to resist the temptation to indulge your sweet tooth at the best of times, but staying fit and healthy becomes even tougher during the festive season due to the wide variety of tempting sweets and savouries on display. This leads many to ask the question, is it even possible to have a healthy Rakshabandhan?

As the festivities gather momentum, no matter where one goes, one is met with the constant refrain of muh meetha kijiye and thoda aur lijiye nah. When faced with such sugary-sweet hospitality, it’s often hard to say no and limit your intake.

As a result, you end up binging on rich, sugar-laden sweets or fried goodies and are left with a considerably heavier body and conscience Post-Rakshabandhan.

However, there’s no need to despair just yet, you can still enjoy the festivities and have a healthy Rakshabandhan without denying yourself your favourite treats or compromising your health and fitness goals.

We, at Magicleaf, have compiled a list of 8 tried-and-tested tips to help you stay fit and feel ‘lite’ this festival of love and care.

Maintain COVID Protocols:

As much as we would like to leave COVID-19 behind us, we cannot yet afford to let down our guard against the raging virus. Therefore, in order for you to have a healthy Rakshabandhan, you need to keep following the WHO-approved safety protocols and social distancing rules to keep yourself and others safe.

So, as you make your way from one Rakshabandhan party to another, make sure to keep your mask on and sanitize your hands as often as possible.

This is also a great time to stick to the traditional namaste and avoid handshakes and hugs. We know that it won’t be the same as before, however, it’s better to take precautions just to be sure.

Limit Your Portions:

It’s quite easy to overindulge during the festive season as one hops from one party to another and is tempted by the festive array of sugar-coated sweets, savouries and drinks that tend to drive all thoughts of constraint out of your mind.

However, overindulging in festive treats can destabilize your blood sugar levels in the short run, and also come with long-term consequences like weight gain and obesity, which, in turn, can increase your chance of developing heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

A simple trick to control your consumption during the festive season is to just pick up a napkin or a small plate and eat one item at a time without overloading your utensil. While the solution may seem a bit too simplistic, it’s actually proven to be quite effective at limiting food portions for a light and healthy Rakshabandhan.

Stay Active:

Festive celebrations and indulgences are often accompanied by increased lethargy as the late-night card parties and rich food leave you feeling bloated and heavy the next morning.

While the foremost temptation may be to simply lie back and rest, you need to pick yourself up and get going to keep last night’s calories from piling up.

So, instead of lazying around in the bed the next morning, get up and go outside for a brisk walk or jog and give your body a break with a light and healthy breakfast. You can also start your day with a cup of your favourite morning beverage, preferably without sugar or any artificial sweeteners that contain harmful ingredients like Dextrose, Maltodextrin, preservatives, chemicals and additives.

Limit Your Beverage Intake:

Who keeps a count of drinks during celebrations, right? No, wrong. It’s actually quite vital to monitor your beverage intake, especially during the festive season as both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages are quite high in sugar and calories.

For example, a glass of whisky and a Coke both contain approx. 250 calories and can make both your blood sugar and weight go haywire, especially during the festive season.

Even though it’s never advisable to drink excessively, people tend to ignore this dictate during Rakshabandhan and that’s why you need to draw a line at a maximum of 2 drinks per night. In fact, give your body a break and drink only on alternative nights or try and see if your host is offering healthier alternatives like fresh juices or homemade mocktails.

Stay Hydrated with Vitamin Water:

A great way to stay energized during the festive season is to watch what you consume throughout the day and to stay well-hydrated and detox after every party.

This is where Vitamin C-enriched water can help you get rid of your hangover more easily and also give you the energy required to keep going during the festive season. However, don’t worry about spending your time squeezing oranges or lemons.

Now all you need to do to give your body a refreshing shot of Vitamin C is just rip open a Magicleaf VitaUp Sachets, add it to a glass of water, stir and just slurp. You can either enjoy our tangy orange vitamin water or make things interesting with our zesty lemon and lime flavour.

Switch to Stevia:

The festive season is a time for much sweet indulgence as everywhere you go you are presented with a platter of rich, traditional desserts that contain between 40-70% sugar (no, we’re not kidding, it’s actually true.)

Even the sugarfree ones are not as healthy as they are purported to be as they also contain alarmingly high levels of artificial, chemical sweeteners, flavors and preservatives that are bad for your health.

While you may not be able to say no to sweets everywhere, you can definitely cut down on the amount you consume at home, swap out the crystal-clear, refined sugar that has been more or less stripped of all its nutrients with a natural alternative like Stevia, extracted from the stevia or meethi tulsi plant that gives you the sweetness without the calories.

Make Your Own Sweets at Home:

This festive season, it’s all about showing off your cooking skills while working from home, right?

Now, while we don’t recommend turning your entire kitchen into a commercial kitchen and churning out a wide variety of sweets, you can definitely make some drool-worthy sweets like no-sugar coconut laddoo or no-sugar kaju katli with Magicleaf Perfect Sweets, a wholesome Stevia-based sugar sweetener for making traditional Indian sweets and desserts.

Opt for No Sugar Desserts:

However, if making your own sweets is not to your taste this Rakshabandhan, then all you need to do is order yourself a box of No Sugar Desserts that are loaded with health and not calories. And, while you’re at it, might we also recommend gifting a few boxes of these delicious, guilt-free sweets to your near and dear ones for a sweet and healthy Rakshabandhan?
